ETO Doors Claims Department receives a variety of calls and emails on a daily basis. Some inquiries are regarding the bore prep. The term “bore prep” is essentially the door knob hole and deadbolt hole.  So what happens if you purchased your new door, but picked the incorrect bore prep for your new hardware? It’s best to purchase your hardware either with the purchase of your new door, or before you purchase your new door. Otherwise, you could potentially run into the problem of the door knob hole being too large for your hardware. Today, we spoke with a customer who wanted to use a 60 year old antique hardware to be installed on his new interior doors, and the door knob hole needed to be larger.

So how do you fix this problem?

1.       Hire a professional carpenter

2.       Start a new “DIY” project!

We spoke with our custom mill works department during lunch, and we took notes.

Remember – ETO recommends you hire a licensed professional, and this is just a guide to use.

Complete this at your own risk!

To make a door hole larger:

Materials needed:
Hole saw
Power drill
400 grit sandpaper

1. Remove the door from its hinges, and set it up where you have easy access to the door knob hole.

2. Attach the hole saw to your drill (you can buy hole saw kits at your local hardware store with all the correct attachments). Position the hole saw over the current hole, making sure it is centered. Simply drill a new hole over the top of the old hole to make it bigger. If you are having trouble with this, you can also use a clamp with a piece of lumber on the underside to help guide the hole saw through. Once you are finished drilling, sand the edges lightly until you get a nice smooth surface.

3. Then, replace your door knob by attaching it to the door! You should be able to slide it in much easier with a hole that fits the fixture.
